The Business Owner's Trap: When Work Takes Over the Life You Built It For

Sep 04, 2026

Most people don't start a business to work more. They start one to build something. To have control over their time. To create a life that looks the way they want it to.

And for a while, that's exactly what it feels like. You're energised. You're building. Things are moving.

Then it gets hard. And you do what every driven person does. You work more.

The Default Setting Nobody Talks About

When the pressure goes up, most business owners have one response: push harder.

Miss the gym this week. It'll settle down. Skip family dinner on Thursday. Big week. Miss the kids' bedtime a few nights in a row. Just until this thing is sorted.

The problem is that "this thing" is never really sorted. Something new comes in behind it. And the cycle continues.

You started the business. Now the business runs you.

I know this pattern intimately. Because I lived it. For years.

What Busy Looks Like From the Inside

There's a version of busy that feels productive. You're across everything. Making decisions. Moving fast.

But if you're honest with yourself, you're also reactive. You're tired more days than not. You're distracted when you're home, because your head is still at work. Your workouts have slipped. You're eating whatever's convenient. You're saying yes to things you should be saying no to, and you're saying no to the things that matter most.

And every week you tell yourself the same thing. Next week will be different.

I said that for years. It wasn't different.

There's a specific kind of exhaustion that comes from grinding hard and still feeling behind. When you look at what you've sacrificed and wonder whether it's actually moving you closer to the life you pictured when you started.

I got there.

The Year Everything Changed

I was building a business I was genuinely proud of. A drinkware & barware brand called D-STILL. Alongside my business partner, Simon, someone I had worked closely with for nearly a decade. We were fully committed. Putting in the hours. Doing what it takes.

Then I lost Simon. A heart attack, completely out of nowhere.

I don't have words for what that does to you. Losing someone you've built something significant alongside is one of those moments that stops everything. You can't just keep going and pretend it didn't happen.

Shortly after, the business didn't survive either. A business that Simon and I had poured years into was gone.

That period forced me to stop and look honestly at what I had been doing. How I had been operating. What I had been prioritising and what I had been putting off. I asked myself questions I hadn't been sitting with. What actually matters to me? What am I building this for? And was I actually living that way?

The honest answer was no. I wasn't.

Bali, and What I Found There

I took my family to Bali. I needed distance from everything. I needed to reconnect with Markie and Jett, to be present with them in a way I hadn't really been for a long time.

That trip changed everything.

It wasn't a holiday in the usual sense. It was a recalibration. I had space to think clearly for the first time in years. To get honest about what I actually wanted my life to look like. To stop performing busy and start asking better questions.

I came back with clarity I hadn't had before. And I knew I wanted to help other leaders get there without having to go through what I went through to find it.

That's where Cut Through Clarity was born.

I Was the First Guinea Pig

I'm not going to stand here and tell you I cracked a system from a whiteboard.

I put it on myself first. I went through the whole thing. Worked through my values, set real goals, designed an ideal week, did the energy audit, built the habits. And I kept testing it, refining it, adjusting it based on what actually moved the needle versus what sounded good in theory.

The system that exists today came from that. From me taking it seriously, running it on myself, and then using it with the leaders I started coaching.

The core insight, the one that runs through everything, is this: clarity changes behaviour. When a leader is genuinely clear on what matters most to them, the decisions get easier. The sacrifices become more obvious. What to protect, and what to let go of, stops being a daily negotiation.

Most leaders never get that clarity. They're too busy to stop and find it. And so they keep grinding, keep sacrificing, and keep wondering why it doesn't feel like enough.

What I Help Leaders Do

I work with business owners and leaders who are performing at a high level by most external measures but who know, if they're being honest, that something is off. They're winning at work. And slowly losing at home.

Health is slipping. Relationships are getting the worst of them. The fun and energy they used to have has quietly disappeared.

They don't need someone to tell them to work harder. They're already doing that.

What they need is clarity on what they're actually working towards, a system that reflects those priorities, and accountability to stick to it when things get busy again.

Helping leaders win at work without losing at home is what gets me out of bed. It's not just a coaching philosophy. It's personal.

If you feel like you're heading down the path I described, please don't stress. Most of the best leaders I know have been there. It doesn't mean you've failed. It means you're ready to get honest and build something better.

Touch base and let's see if we can work together.
