Leadership Burnout in Australia: The Data Behind Why I Built Cut Through Clarity

By Dan Richards | Leadership Coach

I've spent more than 20 years working alongside leaders. And across that entire time, one pattern has stayed consistent. The leaders who appear to be performing at the highest level are often the ones who are closest to the edge.

Not because they're weak. Because the behaviours that are quietly burning them out are the same ones being celebrated.

Here's what the data actually shows.

The Scale of the Problem

The burnout numbers in Australia are confronting.

61% of Australian workers report experiencing burnout, compared to a 48% global average. As of Q3 2025, an estimated 4.3 million Australian workers are currently experiencing burnout...nearly half the workforce.

The economic cost reflects the human one. Burnout and stress-related absenteeism cost the Australian economy an estimated $14 billion annually, with some analyses placing the full figure including presenteeism and turnover closer to $39 billion.

Behind those numbers are organisations losing their best people. And leaders losing themselves.

Why Leaders Specifically

Most burnout conversations focus on employees. That's important. But there's a specific problem at the leadership level that doesn't get enough attention.

Managers report burnout at 26%, slightly higher than the 24% reported by individual contributors. The impact, though, is exponential. Research estimates managers account for around 70% of the variance in team engagement. A burned-out leader doesn't just underperform. They pull an entire team down with them.

Only 44% of managers globally report receiving any formal management training. Yet we promote our best performers into leadership, give them a new title, and expect them to figure it out. They learn to work harder. They get celebrated for it. And the cycle accelerates.

Burned-out employees are 2.6 times as likely to be actively seeking a different job. 40% of resignations are attributed to burnout. The cost of losing a senior leader, when you factor in recruitment, onboarding, and the productivity gap during transition, is significant by any measure.

Why Existing Solutions Aren't Working

The data on organisational response is, frankly, damning.

36% of employees say their organisation isn't doing anything to address burnout. 70% of professionals believe their employer isn't doing enough. And only 5% of employees accessed an EAP in a recent quarter, despite 40% reporting burnout.

But here's what I think most organisations are getting wrong. They're treating the symptom exhaustion rather than the cause.

In one Australian dataset, burnout held steady at 40% across two consecutive quarters even as sick leave, annual leave, and support access all increased. Leaders went on holiday. They came back. The burnout rate didn't move.

Time off alone doesn't fix a clarity problem. And in my experience, that's almost always what's at the root of it.

What I Saw Was Missing

When I look back on the leaders I've worked alongside, and at my own experience building businesses, the common thread is the same. Leaders burn out not just because they work too much. They burn out because they've lost sight of what actually matters to them.

Nobody had ever sat them down and asked: what do you genuinely value? What does a sustainable, high-performing life actually look like for you? How much of your time and energy is going toward things that matter versus things that have just accumulated?

Most leaders couldn't answer those questions clearly. That's the gap I built Cut Through Clarity to fill.

What Cut Through Clarity Does

CTC is a clarity and accountability system built for leaders who want to perform at a high level without sacrificing their health and the people they love.

The system works across five pillars: Core Drivers, Goal Setting, Energy Audit, Habit Stacking, and Ideal Week Design. The output is a One Page Accountability Plan... a single, clear document that reflects what actually matters and becomes the filter through which every decision gets made.

When a leader has that clarity, things change. They stop saying yes to everything. They protect what matters. They show up to work more focused. And they go home with something left to give.

That's not a policy change. It's a different way of operating entirely.

The Direction We're On

The leadership burnout crisis in Australia is real, measurable, and costly. But it's not inevitable.

Clarity on what matters, a plan built around it, and accountability to stick to it. That's where the change starts.

If this resonates, I'd love for you to explore Cut Through Clarity. It's built for leaders who are ready to close the gap between where they are and how they want to show up.
